PsychSlam is an annual competition for transition year students from the Munster region. In 2019, PsychSlam will take place on Friday 28 February in UCC. Through PsychSlam, students explore fun and interesting psychological topics ranging from the neuroscience of love to fake news and whether social media can increase isolation. Students gain valuable experience, learn new skills in public speaking and science communication and develop their knowledge of a diverse range of scientific topics.
PsychSlam allows schools to enter up to two teams of three students. A fun and challenging aspect of the competition is that each team must use the Pecha Kucha method of presentation. This involves the use of 20 slides, each of which is presented for only 20 seconds. On the day, presentations are judged on the accuracy of their content, the clarity of the presentation, and the charisma of the presenters. The PsychSlam judges award 1st, 2nd and 3rd place to the best presentations, and the audience vote is decided by students and teachers who vote for their favourite presentation of the day!
PsychSlam 2020 is managed by the UCC School of Applied Psychology, including two of our FameLab Ireland alumni, Lisa Murphy and Gillian Murphy. It is proudly supported by FameLab Ireland and British Council Ireland.
